Sidebar: NC, SC Meth Lab Busts

There were 1,819 meth lab busts in North Carolina from 2003-2010, according to the State Bureau of Investigation. You can click here to get the annual breakdown for the state and counties. Here's a map of meth lab busts in South Carolina from 2004 through Feb 2, 2011.The map is courtesy of the SC Department of Health and Environmental Control They Said It Here are some additional comments about the lack of federal money to clean up meth labs: There's lots of questions. There are maybe some states that can step in and fill the void from time to time through the Environmental Protection Agency, through their state Environmental Protection Agency, but that's becoming more and more rare as well. Fred Wilson Director of Operations National Sheriffs' Association The sheriffs were concerned about it when they first learned that the funding had been terminated, but as soon as the Attorney General and the SBI stepped up and agreed to provide interim funding, that resolved all of the concerns the sheriffs had and they have no concerns that I am aware of. They are fully enforcing the law and performing cleanup, as was done in the past. Eddie Caldwell Vice President NC Sheriffs' Association What we as an agency are currently trying to do is to figure out just what exactly our role, if any, is going to be in the wake of the DEA decision to no longer conduct gross cleanups of meth labs around our state. What we find ourselves in the position is much the same as the municipalities and the counties. We don't have the staff; we don't have the funding; we don't have the program to do this.
