Mecklenburg County Sheriff Irwin Carmichael has announced that he will double the allowed video visits to county jails, saying he is responding to criticism of the pay-to-visit digital model that quickly gets expensive for poor visitors.

In an appearance on Charlotte Talks Monday, Carmichael said Mecklenburg County jails would now allow two video visits.

In a follow-up press release, Carmichael’s office said with the “expanded capacity and increased efficiencies from reduced inmate movement, visits can now be scheduled on two different days each week.”

Visitors of inmates can purchase additional remote visits at $12.50 for 25 minutes or $5 for 10 minutes.
