Property owners along two blocks of North Tryon Street are seeking a developer for a mixed-use project that would include a replacement for the current Charlotte Mecklenburg Main Library. The 7-acre project between Sixth and Eighth Streets would include market rate and affordable housing, shops, offices and a boutique hotel.
The library owns the parcel at Sixth and Tryon. Library officials and stakeholder groups have been meeting recently to discuss replacing the building, which opened in 1989. Other parcels in the two-block stretch are owned by Mecklenburg County, the City of Charlotte and Bank of America.
Some buildings would remain - Spirit Square, Duckworth's Tap House & Grill and the Hall House, currently owned by the Charlotte Housing Authority.
The project is part of an effort to revitalize the North Tryon Street corridor, known as the North Tryon Vision Plan. Developers have until April 24 to submit proposals.
