A pedestrian was struck and killed by a train in Kannapolis Wednesday morning.
According to officials, the incident occurred shortly after 11:30 a.m. at the train tracks near the intersection of Ridge Avenue and D Street.
Officials say the victim had been walking on the train tracks with a friend when the incident occurred. The friend told officers that they were intoxicated at the time and when they saw the train approaching, the victim was unable to get off of the tracks. The friend was not injured and the name of the victim has not yet been released.
Kannapolis officials say police are still investigating the fatality, but “it appears this was an unfortunate accident.”
The pedestrian death in Kannapolis follows less than a day after a separate incident in south Charlotte. A pedestrian was hit and killed by a car around 6 p.m. Tuesday on Sharon road.
CMPD said there were no crosswalks in the area, and it was dark and raining at the time of the accident. The victim has not yet been identified and no charges have been filed against the driver.
