A woman has been charged with driving while impaired and, according to WSOC, two counts of child abuse after a crash with a school bus.
The accident sent 13 children to the hospital. One is in critical condition, but expected to survive.
The North Carolina Highway Patrol issued a news release saying Kimberly Ann Austin, 56, was also charged with driving left of center. She was being treated Monday at a hospital.
Officials say Austin's car crossed the center line and hit the bus, which was carrying a driver and 19 students.
Twelve students suffered minor injuries, while one was in critical condition though expected to survive. WCNC reports that six of the students who were taken to the hospital were treated for injuries then returned to class.
The accident happened around 7:30 a.m. on Icard Ridge Road and Bulldog Lane, near West Alexander Middle School.
