Donald Dorsey was sworn in this week as Chester County’s interim sheriff.
Dorsey who heads SLED’s narcotics division, was appointed to the position by South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster after Sheriff Alex Underwood and two of his command officers were indicted by a federal grand jury this week.
Underwood, along with Chief Deputy Robert Sprouse and Deputy Lt. Johnny Neal were charged with using excessive force to arrest a man live-streaming a traffic wreck outside his home last year–and conspiring to cover it up.
Underwood was elected Chester’s sheriff in 2012, the first African American to hold the position. He was given credit for aggressively tacking the county’s gang problem and was featured on national media outlets for his work with youths. All three are expected to appear in federal court later this month.
