One person drowned after a small boat sank in the Catawba River near Belmont this morning. Belmont police say it happened near the Kevin Loftin Riverfront Park around 4:30 a.m.
Police say the boat was ferrying people back and forth to an island in the river when it began taking on water. Three other people who were on board were able to swim to shore.
The body of the fourth person was found around 1 p.m., according to WSOC-TV.
Police have not released the name of the person who drowned or those of the other three people involved. Officials also haven't said what caused the boat to sink.
