Police are releasing more details about an officer-involved shooting that left a man dead outside a home in northeast Charlotte overnight. Police say the suspect, 55-year-old Delano Williams, was armed when officers encountered him shortly after midnight.
They were called to the home by woman who said her father was armed, while gunshots were heard on the line. When officers arrived at the home, they say more shots were heard from inside, and a woman who identified herself as the suspect’s sister-in-law had been shot in the leg. She also told police that her sister was still inside the home with Williams and that she believed he was going to kill her.
The department says Officer John Juhasz rounded the house and encountered the suspect, firing at least once and fatally injuring him. Williams later died at a hospital. The department says three other teenagers who were inside the home escaped without injury.
CMPD says officers responded to a domestic violence call at the home earlier in the evening, but said the suspect in that call had left by the time officers arrived.
No other injuries have been reported. A gun believed to be in the suspect’s possession at the time of the shooting was recovered at the scene, according to the department.
CMPD Chief Kerr Putney said this was an isolated incident.
