A proposed light rail line connecting Belmont and Matthews to uptown Charlotte could get an adjacent pedestrian and biking trail.

The Charlotte Area Transit System is asking City Council to help fund a study looking at the possible construction of such a trail, which could be like the current rail trail alongside the Blue Line.

City Council is scheduled to take a vote Monday on allocating $25,000 for the study, and the town of Matthews is also chipping in $25,000. The remaining $150,000 would be funded by the Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization.

Plans for the new light rail line – to be named the Silver Line – are still in the early stages. As currently proposed, it would run from Belmont in Gaston County, then to the Charlotte-Airport and uptown, then southeast to Matthews.
