Police say three people were killed in homicides this weekend in Charlotte. Two of the assaults happened in east Charlotte and one near the University City neighborhood.

On Friday evening, Charlotte Mecklenburg police officers responded to 911 calls about a shot being fired in an apartment complex and a shooting at a convenience store in east Charlotte.

CMPD officers arrived to the apartment complex in the 5300 block of Firelight Lane at 5:21 p.m. Callers to 911 reported hearing a gun shot and seeing people running from the area. Officers set up a perimeter at the apartments and used a K-9 to try to track the suspects. No suspects were found.

At 5:24 p.m., CMPD responded to reports of a shooting near 7008 Albemarle Road. When they arrived, officers found a man with an apparent gunshot wound in the parking lot of a Valero convenience store. Zion Garcia, 20, was taken by MEDIC to a hospital. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

While at the convenience store, officers learned that the victim was shot at the apartment complex on Firelight Lane. An unidentified third party took the victim to the Valero convenience store on Albemarle Road.

On Sunday, police announced 18-year-old Nyla Burnett, 21-year-old Jalen Meggett and 27-year-old Jahmel Williams had been charged with murder in the slaying.

Saturday afternoon shortly after 3:40, CMPD officers from the University City division responded to calls about a physical assault near 10200 Pintail Place. Officers found a man with apparent life-threatening trauma in the common area of an apartment complex. Billy Clay McKay Jr., 35,  was taken to a hospital by MEDIC where he died a short time later.

Jonathan Andre Ramsey, 31, has been charged with murder in McKay's death.
