NC Senate Committee Takes Up Voter ID Amendment

A North Carolina Senate committee Thursday will debate adding a photo ID requirement for voting to the state's constitution.  The proposal has already passed the House.  It must also pass the Senate before it appears as a referendum on this November’s ballot.

The General Assembly’s Republican majority says the change is needed to prevent voter fraud. Opponents say reviews of the 2016 elections found minimal irregularities and that they had no impact on outcomes.

A court struck down a 2013 voter ID law North Carolina legislators passed, finding it had a discriminatory intent targeting black voters.
