Judicial elections in North Carolina are all but set for Novemberwith the candidate filing period over for trial and appeals courts.

Raleigh attorney Chris Anglin was a last-minute addition to the state Supreme Court race already featuring incumbent Associate Justice Barbara Jackson and civil rights lawyer Anita Earls.

Two of the three statewide Court of Appeals races also have three candidates.

Judicial elections are unusual this year because the General Assembly canceled primaries because they were debating judicial district and selection changes.

One of those changes resulted in splitting Mecklenburg County into eight separate electoral districts for both district and superior courts. Previously, district judges were elected countywide.

In Mecklenburg County, there are competitive races for four district court seats. In five races, the incumbents are the only ones running. They are Republican Matt Osman and Democrats Paige McThenia, Regan Miller, Tracy Hanna Hewitt, and Rickye McKoy-Mitchell.

For the Superior Court district that covers Mecklenburg County, there’s only one competitive race. That’s between Republican George Bell, and Democrats Howard Clark and Reggie McKnight.

The top vote-getter for each position in November is elected whatever the percentage of the vote received. Candidates will have their registered voter affiliation next to their names on the ballot.
