Charlotte Talks Local News Roundup: Mecklenburg County Commission Email Drama; City Noise Ordinance

Friday, May 31, 2019

Drama surrounds the Mecklenburg County Commissioners, who are under fire for talking about the proposed county budget via email. Anti-abortion activists are against a possible noise ordinance change in Charlotte. And a Senate vote on the proposed North Carolina budget this week- we’ll go through the details.

Was the law broken? County Commissioners recently had email and phone conversations about the Mecklenburg County Budget, and questions have been raised about whether this violates the state’s open meetings law. We'll talk about what Commission Chair George Dunlap had to say.

Charlotte City Council is considering changes to a noise ordinance in the city that has anti-abortion rights activists up in arms. The ordinance would include a limit on amplified noise within 200 feet of schools, houses of worship and medical facilities when they are open. Some anti-abortion rights activists say this violates their first amendment rights. What was the response from the city council?

The state of North Carolina is also in its budget process- the Senate and the House differ on their proposals for raises for teachers and other state employees. We’ll talk about that and Governor Cooper’s reaction to how the Senate approaches Medicaid expansion, as well as other state budget items.
