Police: Dirt Bike Rider Dies After Wrecking In Charlotte Traffic Stop

A man on a dirt bike was killed after he wrecked during an attempted traffic stop in Charlotte on Sunday night.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say 33-year-old Michael Bernard Adams was among a group of dirt bike and ATV riders an officer was trying to pull over on West Boulevard near Interstate 77 when Adams ran off the road and hit a concrete pillar.

The department says the officer, who was riding a motorcycle, suspected the group of being involved with a reported physical assault and a hit-and-run earlier in the evening at a nearby Bojangles' restaurant. Police say Adams was not wearing a helmet and that speed does not appear to have been a factor in the crash.

Apparently the riders of the other dirt bikes and ATVs left the scene.

Medics took Adams to Carolinas Medical Center but he died.

There’s no evidence there was any contact between the officer’s motorcycle and the other vehicles, according to the department. The crash is still under investigation, and the department says there's a separate internal affairs investigation into whether CMPD policies were followed during the traffic stop.
