One of Germany’s oldest breweries is planning to expand to Charlotte. The Charlotte Observer reports Hanover-based Gilde is planning a brewery that will be able to produce 500,000 barrels a year.

Gilde CEO Karsten Uhlmann told the paper that Charlotte’s rapid growth, airport access and sizeable German business community are among the reasons it’s setting up in Charlotte

Gilde has been brewing beer since 1546.

According to the Observer, the Gilde operation would be the largest brewery in Charlotte.

There are already dozens of breweries in the area, but they primarily focus on craft beer, and the largest of them produce far less than 500,000 barrels a year

Initially, Gilde would open a microbrewery that would produce just a few thousand barrels of beer a year. Uhlmann said that more than 100 people would be employed between the two projects.

Gilde’s not the only brewery to eye North Carolina as a second home in recent years. Large craft brewerer Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. of California and two large Colorado companies, New Belgium Brewing Co. and Oskar Blues Brewery, have all opened East Coast operations in the Asheville area.
