Gov. Josh Stein speaks to luncheon attendees at Mint Museum Uptown on Thursday, May 15, 2025.

North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein attended a luncheon in Charlotte on Thursday, hosted by the Latin American Chamber of Commerce.

Thursday’s event at the Mint Museum Uptown, "Business and Talent Motivation," brought together Latino and non-Latino business leaders for conversation and networking.

More than one in 10 people in North Carolina are Hispanic or Latino, and the share is growing fast. Stein said Latinos and immigrant business owners are essential to North Carolina’s economy.

"I want folks to be able to succeed — for them to have a dream of what kind of service or good they want to bring to market, and then have every opportunity to have a successful business," Stein said.

Stein mentioned that he is pushing for free community college for all North Carolina residents and has called for $250 million in North Carolina’s legislative budget to be allocated toward developing the state’s workforce.

The luncheon was organized with the help of Gabriel Esparza, the state’s secretary of administration, and the state's first Latino Cabinet member.

A fluent Spanish speaker, Julian Berger will focus on Latino communities in and around Charlotte, which make up the largest group of immigrants. He will also report on the thriving immigrant communities from other parts of the world — Indian Americans are the second-largest group of foreign-born Charlotteans, for example — that continue to grow in our region.
