  • One of the staples of backcountry life is growing your own food. Popular vegetables such as corn and cucumbers will be the focus of our cooking demonstration from 10 A.M. to 2 P.M. on Saturday, August 10.

    We will explore how they were grown, possible varieties and growing tips. Our receipts will include roasted corn, parched corn, popcorn, receipts using corn meal, forced cucumbers, ragooed cucumbers, and of course, it wouldn't be summer without a batch of pickled cucumbers! You can also try your hand at grinding corn!

    We hope to see you in the Polk Kitchen as we share the receipts and smells of the 18th century life during James K. Polk's time.

  • Matthews Playhouse is thrilled to announce the opening of its 29th season with the world premiere of “One Year to Die”, a compelling new World War II drama exploring life on the home front, written by Charles LaBorde and directed by Dennis Delamar. Set in a small Louisiana town, the play explores the harrowing experiences of Edwina, a White Cajun housewife (Paula Baldwin), and Ella, an African-American widow (Dr. Corlis Hayes), as they await news of their sons' fates during the war. Both women share the burden of crossing racial lines in the South in 1943-1944, reflecting the experiences of countless women who sustained the nation during this tumultuous period.

    "One Year to Die" is inspired by the true experiences of LaBorde's grandmother, Edwina LaBorde, and her son, Joe LaBorde, who served on the USS Rowan during World War II. The USS Rowan was tragically sunk on September 11, 1943, and now lies in the Tyrrhenian Sea. This highly anticipated production will run from September 20-29, 2024, with a special “Pay What You Can Preview” on Thursday, September 19th at 7:30 pm, benefiting the Matthews Veterans Memorial Restoration Project.

    This production contains mature content and is recommended for ages 16 and up.

    Ticket Information: Prices range from $11` to $20, with discounts for seniors, military personnel, students, and children. Active-duty service members, veterans, and their families will receive a 25% discount on their ticket order when they use code MILITARY25 at checkout.

    What are the compelling stories speaking to our times? One of literature’s great Southern authors addresses the question.

    Wiley Cash is an award-winning New York Times bestselling author of four novels, the founder of This Is Working, an online creative community, and host of the Our State Book Club podcast. He’s the recipient of many literary awards, including the Thomas Wolfe Book Prize, Southern Book Prize, and the American Library Association Book of the Year.

    Published in 2021, Cash’s novel When Ghosts Come Home was a national bestseller and one of Amazon’s top 20 books of the year. The Last Ballad, published in 2017, received numerous awards as best book of the year.

    He currently teaches creative writing and literature at the University of North Carolina-Asheville. He holds a Ph.D. in American Literature from UL-Lafayette, an M.A. in English from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro, and a B.A. in Literature from UNC-Asheville.

    Judy Goldman is the author of seven books – three memoirs, two novels, and two collections of poetry. Her latest memoir, Child: A Memoir was named a must-read by Katie Couric Media. Goldman has been published in The Southern Review and Kenyon Review. She has many literary awards, including the Hobson Award for Distinguished Achievement in Arts and Letters.
