  • Arts at the Abbey begins another season on September 23, 2024, at 8:00 PM with the Pivetta Duo -flutist, chamber musician, orchestral player and teacher Debra Reuter-Pivetta and Federico Pivetta, a versatile pianist with a unique mastery of both classical and jazz styles. Their program will consist of classical music and jazz including music by Boulanger. Bizet, Puccini, Jobim and others. The concert is free though donations will be gladly accepted.   • North Carolina Poet Laureate Jaki Shelton Green and artist Monique Luck bring an interactive, artistic poetic installation to life, using the words from Shelton Green’s poem "The Communion of White Dresses" in an exhibition by the same name. This exhibition reimagines the tradition, symbolism, and representation of white dresses, exploring their intersection with the generational culture of white dresses and the black female body politic.


    Celebrate the opening of The Communion of White Dresses with a poetry reading by North Carolina Poet Jaki Shelton Green will give a poetry reading, followed by an artist talk between artist Monique Luck and Shelton Green, moderated by former McColl Center vice president + creative director Jonell Logan, about the collaborative project that was developed during residencies at McColl Center for the Arts in Fall 2023.
  • Artist Kenny Nguyen creates masterful textile sculptures with paint-soaked silk. The finished works are comprised of three layers of mixed media: silk, paint, and canvas. Nguyen merges his cultural traditions and the canon of abstract painting and fiber art in an innovative way. He has exhibited in France, Iceland, South Korea, and Germany.

    Join Nguyen and Jamila Brown, assistant curator of Contemporary Art at The Mint Museum, 6:30 PM September 6 at Mint Museum Uptown in conversation for the opening celebration of Nguyen’s installation Adaptations.


    About Constellation CLT
    Constellation CLT is an exhibition series designed to connect visitors with artists in our community, as well as activate the public spaces of the museum. The installations rotate three times per year and can be seen in five places at Mint Museum Uptown: Just inside the museum entrance; at the bottom of the Morrison Atrium escalator; on the landings of the Mezzanine and Level 3; and in The Museum Store.

  • Featuring 50 top North Carolina potters, Potters Market at the Mint offers shopping, pottery demos, live bluegrass, a beer garden, and raffles under the big tent on Mint Museum Randolph’s lawn. Whether you are an experienced collector or new to the art form, whether you are interested in functional ware, abstract sculptures, or decorative pieces, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

    Tickets start at $20 and include museum entry.
  • Join us Saturday, September 28th as we explore receipts from "The Raised Hearth" a translation from two 18th century German cookbooks. Our focus is going to be the wonderful potato! We will make a potato salad with a few different ingredients - sardines and beets. Another receipt will be potato soup served with toast. Also on the menu will be roast potatoes using an 18th century method, along with roasted onions. Potatoes with milk with finish out the day. Milk was sometimes used to cook potatoes or rice instead of water. All of the receipts can be found in "The Raised Hearth," edited by Joanna Roberts. The kitchen is open 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free, however donations are greatly appreciated.

  • Join the Charlotte Symphony for an unforgettable evening at our Annual Gala Concert featuring the "top-notch" chamber ensemble (The New York Times) that is breaking down barriers to classical music! Renowned for their extraordinary artistry and commitment to diversity, the Sphinx Virtuosi have performed with Beyoncé and Jay-Z and appeared on the 2022 GRAMMY Awards broadcast. In this one-night-only event, the ensemble and celebrated violinist Adé Williams perform with the Charlotte Symphony under the direction of Conductor Laureate Christopher Warren-Green.

    The program showcases diverse voices and musical storytelling, including two world premieres: Daydreaming, an imaginative tribute to Scott Joplin by film composer and advocate Levi Taylor, and Drill by violinist-composer Curtis Stewart, who "translates stories of American self-determination to the concert stage." The evening also includes well-known works by Bernstein, Piazzolla, Joplin, and more.

  • In her show, Makin’ Cake, Wisconsin Poet Laureate Dasha Kelly Hamilton uses the history of baking to explore race, culture, and class in a refreshing and fun way. It is multimedia storytelling filled with aha-moments and poignant vignettes, and two on-stage bakers serving engaging audiences in a conversation about equity in America. Part history lesson, part social science revelation, Makin’ Cake is a short story about America's sweet tooth with a cake reception immediately following the performance.
