Our community is stronger when it is safe and convenient for everyone to ride a bike whenever and wherever they want or need to go. Through this important fundraiser, we will keep working to make that possible.

The party will begin and end at Triple C Brewing Co. Once again, there will be a longer route and shorter route to choose between. Along the route, you can stop at local businesses and get your passport stamped. The more stamps you get, the better shot you have at winning one of our many amazing raffle prizes at the afterparty!

  • Rowe Side Gallery is pleased to host an opening reception for Role Play, a solo show by Charlotte-based artist and Department of Art & Art History alumna Kalin Devone, on view August 16 through September 24.

Devone mines for our inner child. Her chosen subjects are friends and family with whom she has reminisced about childhood experiences and waxed nostalgic about those early carefree years. Devone's careful selection of visual cues, textures, and colors are intended to trigger memories of simplistic pleasures that have been lost along our journey to adulthood. "One day we just assumed all of the seriousness and responsibility of being an adult, but where did those earlier versions of ourselves go?"

A native of Wilmington, Kalin Devone graduated from UNC Charlotte in 2015 with her BFA degree in Painting. She has made a name for herself on the local art scene by combining realism and gestural mark-making to create vibrant portraits. She has completed a number of commissioned works in collaboration with such entities as the PGA Tour, the Charlotte Hornets, Puma, BET, Modelo, Charlotte FC, and Formula 1.
  • Rowe Galleries host an opening reception and artist talk for How I Got Over:
Contemporary Black Southern Portraiture, A testimony of community, joy and triumph, curated by Yvonne Bynoe.

The exhibition features works by a multi-generational group of eight artists from across the American South. The artists through their diverse portraiture not only present their personal narratives, but also an understanding about how Black Southerners see themselves as both Americans and ancestral standard bearers.

Black Southerners are the genesis of the African American identity. For African Americans who don’t live in the South, most have a parent, grandparent or great-grandparent who did. Southern Black culture inhabits the specters of West African captives who influenced the food, hairstyles, language, and artifacts. It's a very rich terrain that birthed the socially conservative “Black church,” a legion of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), several American music genres, and numerous artists, such Romare Bearden, who was born in Mecklenburg County.

The Civil Rights movement was formed and led primarily by Black Southerners. Gospel legend Mahalia Jackson was a confidante to Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. She performed the spiritual “How I Got Over” at the “March On Washington for Jobs and Freedom” in 1963. The exhibition takes its title from the popular hymn that exemplifies a people who for centuries have faced insurmountable barriers and triumphed by leaning on their faith in God and in themselves.

  • The Projective Eye Gallery in The Dubois Center at UNC Charlotte Center City hosts a reception for the exhibition Land of Oz in conjunction with the city-wide CharlOz Festival.

Land of Oz brings together props, costumes, photos, and memorabilia from the celebrated theme park, creating a scene of enchantment at the end of the Yellow Brick Road. It is on view in the gallery August 22-October 18.

Located in Beech Mountain, NC, Land of Oz was designed and built in the late 1960s. It officially opened in June 1970 and quickly grew in popularity as an immersive theatrical experience, attracting an average of 450,000 guests in a single season. Unfortunately, a majority of the park was destroyed by a large fire in December 1975. During the ensuing six months, the park was rebuilt and reopened in June, adding new costumes and attractions.

But its renaissance would be short lived; due to lack of maintenance, the park would officially close in 1981. For five years, it would sit abandoned and susceptible to the mountain's harsh weather conditions and trespassing vandals. Plans were eventually made to build a gated community on the Oz site and demolition of the park's attractions began in the late 1980s. As a final celebration, the park reopened to the public for one day, drawing nearly 4,000 visitors.

The outstanding attendance caused park owners to rethink its demolition and instead limit the times the park could be open each year. The first Autumn at Oz occurred in October 1993 and continues to be a popular seasonal event for audiences around the country. In 2023, Land of Oz celebrated the 30th anniversary of its renaissance and remains a seasonal attraction for "Ozzies" everywhere.
  • The Department of Art & Art History hosts an opening reception for its 60th anniversary show, Generations: 60 Years – 21 Conversations. On view October 8-November 8, this exhibition celebrates 60 years of accomplishment in the visual arts, marking the start of art-based research at UNC Charlotte and honoring the oldest of the programs in the College of Arts + Architecture.

In 1964, the acclaimed North Carolina painter Maud Gatewood was hired to create a new program, and over the next decade she developed courses and hired colleagues, spearheaded the design of an arts building and its facilities, and sustained dialogue with institutions such as the Mint Museum and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Both the department and the university have grown dramatically in the intervening years, as more than 3,000 alumni have graduated from the visionary program Gatewood founded.

In recognition of this momentous milestone, we will fill the galleries of Rowe Arts with 85 works that bear witness to the past and consider what may come. Curated by Professor of Art History Jim Frakes, Generations: 60 Years – 21 Conversations draws works by alumni and current faculty of the Department of Art & Art History into thematic and visual conversation with the contributions of 21 "legacy" faculty.

The resulting generational display signifies both the passing down of knowledge from one group to the next, and also the recognitionthat new growth is made possible atop ground prepared by those who come before.

  • “Laser Beams and Old Maps: Searching Remotely for Archaeology Under Lake Wateree”
James D. Scurry, NASC Research Affiliate, and Christopher Judge, USC Lancaster Instructor of Anthropology and Archaeology

Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), is a remote sensing technology that uses laser light to measure elevations and accurately define the surface of the ground even in highly vegetated conditions. It has been used in Europe and in Central and South America to identify structures and features obscured by trees or agricultural crops. The drawdown of Lake Wateree by Duke Energy provided an excellent opportunity to employ LiDAR to locate potential earthworks, structures and other landform features obscured by the lake since the 1920s.

Presented in person and virtually. To attend via Zoom, register via this link: https://bit.ly/3LYV0t0
