    The State of Birds of Mecklenburg County: Tracking the Changes from Elizabeth Clarkson to the Present

    Since the publication of the 1st edition of Elizabeth Clarkson’s The Birds of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County North Carolina in 1944, tremendous changes have occurred that affect local bird life. Come learn how an increasingly urban landscape has impacted local and migratory birding populations. We will look at how some key species are dealing with a changing landscape and take a broad look at the species that have occurred in Mecklenburg County. Teaser: It's not all bad news.

    The Curator of Wing Haven Garden & Bird Sanctuary will share rarely-seen historic photos of trees, shrubs, perennials, and bulbs that were planted by the creators, Eddie & Elizabeth Clarkson. Attendees will learn about the qualities of these plants and look at current pictures of these plants in bloom. Come dig deeper into Elizabeth Clarkson’s plant and garden design choices.

    Learn how you can cope with climate change (heat waves, drought, flooding, shifting plant zones) by creating resilient gardens suited to your own natural ecosystems.

    Gardeners can become part of the solution by designing spaces that attract and benefit native wildlife, promote healthy soil, and use sustainable, climate-friendly practices. The presentation will emphasize the use of native plants and will present alternatives to lawn grass. Attendees will learn about plants that are suited to the North Carolina Piedmont. Be encouraged, gardeners have a lot of great options for adapting to and mitigating climate change.

    Landscape preservation expert Glenn Stach (Biltmore Village, Asheville) will share perspectives and sensibilities of analysis and design within America's most coveted historic landscapes. From battlefields to historic gardens, Mr. Stach will share experiences and best practices for designing with the genius rooted in place of various historic landscapes. Projects highlighted during this talk include work at Presidential Homes, Civil War and Revolutionary War Battlefields, Historic Estates and Gardens, and sites important to indigenous and African American culture.

    Bobby Ward, editor of A Garden of One’s Own: Writings of Elizabeth Lawrence, a compilation of Elizabeth Lawrence’s writings, will share about Lawrence’s life including her early years in Raleigh and the connections she made while living there. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn about Lawrence’s writings, work, relationships with other gardeners and writers, and the many contributions she made to the gardening world. Lawrence is considered the “gardener’s biographer” and is often dubbed the Jane Austen of the gardening literary world. Her writing style was clear and concise, elegant but plain-spoken.

    Bunny Mellon was an American horticulturist, gardener, philanthropist, and art collector who designed the White House Rose Garden during the Kennedy administration.

    During this presentation, Holden will introduce Bunny Mellon's gardening philosophy -- her modes and methods of adapting outdoor spaces to the natural landscape including plant selection, design, and resolving challenges encountered along the way.

    Linda Jane Holden’s books will be available for purchase at the lecture.
