UNC Charlotte's Chill at IPH Summer Lifelong Learning Workshop Series
Chill out with the talented faculty at UNC Charlotte’s College of Humanities & Earth and Social Sciences inside Charlotte’s (air conditioned!) Independent Picture House (IPH), set close to all that NoDa has to offer.
This newest CHESS Initiative of Lifelong Learning (CHILL) at IPH comprises a full schedule of short, multisession workshops for those hungry for community, intellectual stimulation, or just a place to get away from Internet streaming during the hottest hours of the day. Some of these workshops are geared to the biggest questions of our time. Others are meant to provide accessible introductions to essential topics. A few will help you tap into your creative side. All classes start at 10am and are done by 12pm.
Registration is $150 (individuals register for an entire session to attend all four courses).
What to Expect
CHILL at IPH will offer six workshops – five taught in English and one taught in Spanish – this summer. Let us know what you’d like to learn about next! That might include topics on AI, literature, film superheroes, immigration in the 21st Century, romantic comedy as a genre, how to write a poem, how to write a short story, the future of secondary education in the US, how to learn Japanese/Spanish/German/French/Italian without really trying and more!
All CHILL at IPH classes:
--Are taught by faculty with distinguished records of teaching and research.
--Are designed to be accessible to all students, no matter what they may know or not know about the class’s topic.
--Have minimal homework and no formal tests.
--Include “CHILL time” when classmates can talk informally with each other and their professor about class content.
Get Rewards for Signing Up
You will receive a Certificate of Completion after each workshop. And, if you sign up for three workshops this summer, you can get a fourth CHILL at IPH workshop for free in 2025 or 2026.
End of Year Celebration
Join us and your fellow students to celebrate that UNC Charlotte and IPH got to CHILL all summer with the Charlotte community!

Color Riot Art Show: A Celebration of Bold Expression by Seven Artists of Color
Color Riot: Artists Exploring Boundaries is a bold and dynamic exhibition showcasing the work of contemporary artists of color who harness the expressive power of color to transcend limitations; cultural, social, and formal.
Drawing inspiration from the boundary-breaking legacies, these artists use color not only as a visual strategy but as a radical tool of identity, emotion, and defiance.
Like Amy Sherald and Kerry James Marshall, whose palettes reframe Black identity within art historical contexts, the featured artists reclaim space through intentional chromatic choices by painting the skin in unexpected hues, layering vibrant patterns, and disrupting expectations of realism. Their work echoes the emotional resonance of Rothko's color fields, the rebellious non-naturalism of the Fauves, and the culturally grounded figuration of Kolade Oshinowo.
Whether through portraiture, abstraction, or installation, these six artists push beyond traditional artistic and societal boundaries. Color Riot is not just an explosion of pigment. It is a declaration of presence, of selfhood, and of freedom. In a world that often imposes limits, this exhibition celebrates color as liberation.
THIS EVENT IS FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

Gallery Reception: (H)OURS: Elliana Esquivel and Chris Nichol
The Gallery Reception will take place August 28th 6-8pm.
This exhibition offers a collaborative escape into a fantasy realm unbound from generative technology. Scenes in an illusory world conceived by the human mind’s creative spark and born from the technical expertise of skilled human hands. It is a world limited only by the time it takes to create it; rather than being hastily crafted with computers, this world has been meticulously developed by-hand over the course of hours and days.
Elliana Esquivel and Chris Nichol are not Ai converts. They prefer a hands-on approach, intending for their creations to reflect the mental and physical challenges inherent in the act of making. In a time dominated by artificial intelligence, they fear the decline of genuine artistic expression and question if there is still room for those who dedicate themselves to creating in a world increasingly influenced by AI.
The worlds they create, much like the spaces in which they work, are not defined by the presence of generative technology. Their characters, landscapes, and surreal settings harken back to a time of tangible experiences and natural existence.
Elliana Esquivel is a self-taught, multidisciplinary artist whose minimalistic works explore social and psychological aspects of human life. Delving into themes of identity, survival, personal agency, social unease, and introspection, her artworks are vehicles for navigating through chaos in search of meaning.
Chris Nichol is a multimedia visual artist dedicated to the manual practice of drawing, painting, and sculpture. His pieces often satirize modern society, offering a form of escapism through peculiar world-building and exaggerated perspectives.
They maintain a shared studio space at Goodyear Arts.
This exhibition is on display August 13- September 19
Gallery Reception: Controlled Oppositions: Clayton Harper
The gallery reception will be August 28th 6-8pm.
Current attempts to integrate the arts into the ideological system of the ruling party or the tech industry have eroded our faith in art as an independent, liberating force. But is this forced evolution of art intentionally perverse? Or, is it just a product of our time? In our desperate attempts to find “the Left’s Joe Rogan” and escape red tweets for blue skies, we accept that the revolution will be uploaded. But, on what platform?
Rather than deny art’s inevitable role in shaping both power and resistance, perhaps we should embrace it. In Controlled Oppositions, Clay Harper envisions a world where image-making is surrendered to generative AI’s stock footage libraries, allowing their inherent contradictions to unfold in tangles of physical and virtual space. By highlighting these friction points, he searches for a form of media that does more than simply rebrand existing modes of content consumption; it aims to render such modes obsolete.
This exhibition will be on display August 28- October 4.
