SPOTLIGHT: A Chamber Music Showcase

Join us for Spotlight, a special concert featuring the extraordinary instrumentalists frequently seen alongside the Gay Men’s Chorus of Charlotte and Women’s Chorus of Charlotte. This intimate chamber music performance takes center stage for one performance only on Sunday, March 2, 2025, at 4:00 PM at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church (1510 E 7th St, Charlotte).

Audiences will be treated to a rare opportunity to hear excerpts from two stunning masterworks: Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio No. 1, Op. 49 and Chausson’s Concerto for Piano, Violin, and String Quartet, Op. 21 — rich, evocative pieces that showcase the beauty and power of collaborative musicianship.

In her JAZZ ROOM Charlotte debut, acclaimed saxophonist and vocalist extraordinaire Camille Thurman, featuring the Darrell Green Quartet, will wrap up Season 21 with the sounds of classic jazz, including original music from her latest works, in celebration of Women’s History Month.

As an accomplished composer, esteemed saxophonist, vocalist, and unique interpreter of the jazz tradition, she is quickly becoming one of the leading standard bearers of the art form. Her distinct musical approach to classic and original repertoire, which highlights her craft as a powerhouse singer and instrumentalist, is a captivating blend of tradition and innovation. She makes a considerable and dynamic contribution to the legacy of jazz while paying tribute to its heroes through her music.

The New York City native has amassed several distinctive honors for her musicianship: NAACP Image Award Nominee for Outstanding Jazz Album, recipient of the SOUTH Arts Creative Jazz Road Artistic Residency, Downbeat Magazine’s Critics Poll Nominee for Rising Star Tenor Saxophonist and Vocalist and Rising New Artist (2023, 2022, 2021 & 2020), two-time winner of the ASCAP Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composers Award, a recipient of the Fulbright Scholars Cultural Ambassador Grant and Chamber Music of America Performance Plus Grant (Sponsored by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation) among others. Thurman also has five full-length recordings as a leader to her credit. Her most recent project, “Confluence: Vol 1,” is a collaboration with master drummer Darrell Green and his quartet.

Thurman made history, becoming the first woman in 30 years to tour, record, and perform full-time internationally with the world-renowned Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra as a saxophonist/woodwind doubler (2018-2020 season). A respected bandleader, she has headlined numerous notable concert venues and jazz festivals worldwide, including the Kennedy Center, The Library of Congress, and the Rose Theater. Her international recognition is a testament to the universal appeal of her music and the profound impact she has made on the global jazz community.

This talk provides a gist of Omer Bartov’s forthcoming book on the transformation of Zionism from a movement of Jewish emancipation and liberation into a state ideology of ethno-nationalism, exclusion and violent domination of Palestinians. It traces the process whereby Israel—whose establishment received widespread international support in the aftermath of the Holocaust—now stands accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Most crucially, the talk examines how and why less than eight decades after its founding in 1948—the year in which the UN Genocide Convention was adopted in response to Nazi crimes—the Jewish state has become engaged in a genocidal undertaking in Gaza. What are the implications of Israel’s near total impunity for the post-1945 regime of international law? And how do we understand the almost universal support for these policies by Israel’s Jewish citizens? Sponsored by the Dean Rusk International Studies Program and the Jewish Studies Lecture Series.

Omer Bartov is Professor of Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Brown University. Among his many works are the award-winning Anatomy of a Genocide: The Life and Death of a Town Called Buczacz (2018), and Genocide, The Holocaust and Israel-Palestine: First-Person History in Times of Crisis (2023). Bartov’s essays and commentaries on the current crisis in the Middle East have been featured in many national and international outlets, including the New York Times, New Yorker, The Guardian, and Le Monde.

Saxophonist and Charlotte native Adrian Crutchfield is known for his diverse musical abilities, pulling from a variety of genres to create a neo-soul sound all his own. After receiving his first saxophone at age 4 from Kenny G during a concert in Virginia, Adrian has gone on to become “one of his generation’s most prolific and successful professional musicians.” Having worked with a range of artists including Branford Marsalis, Lionel Richie, Ceelo Green and Bette Midler, Adrian toured and recorded with Prince and the New Power Generation as the leader of the band’s 11-piece horn section from 2012-2016.

Known as one of the most influential saxophonists of his time, Grover Washington Jr. was a trailblazer in his field. First influenced by his father who also played the sax, Washington was performing in the New York club scene by age 12. Within his career, Grover was recorded on hits such as “Inner City Blues” and “Just the Two of Us” and with labels ranging from Motown Records to Columbia Records. Washington is known for his unique sound, giving his saxophone playing a full range of personal voices.

The Grammy Award winning Passion for Bach and Coltrane pairs Imani Winds, the poet A.B. Spellman, Harlem Quartet, and a jazz piano trio to synthesize classical and jazz styles, highlighting the gifts of all the performers onstage. Inspired by and featuring Spellman’s poetry, Passion interweaves orated poems with music, in a manner inspired by J.S. Bach’s Passion settings. Jeff Scott selected one masterwork by each composer — Bach’s Goldberg Variations and John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme — and used each as source material to construct a mosaic tapestry around the drama and imagery in Spellman's text. Pensive, ethereal moments are punctuated by Bach, while the tone for moody, dark passages is set by Coltrane's work. Winner of the 2024 Grammy for Best Classical Compendium Album.

This popular shutterbug weekend includes presentations from top nature photographers, hands-on field courses, a friendly contest and the rare opportunity to photograph the mountain’s spectacular scenery before and after regular business hours.

This revamped version of the popular weekend will include changes to better welcome all levels of photographers, making it more fun and engaging for all – while better connecting participants with the wonders and unique ecology of Grandfather Mountain. This year, more than ever, we hope to not only help participants learn about photography, but to also inspire them to preserve the natural world. Activities begin Friday evening and conclude Sunday midday.

Take a daily, short, guided stroll that highlights Grandfather Mountain’s rhododendron species and blooms. Included with admission. See the blooms and learn about their history, attributes and roles they play in the mountain’s ecological communities. The easygoing walks take approximately 20 minutes and are fit for guests of all ages – wheelchair and stroller accessible. Meet outside the entrance of the Wilson Center for Nature Discovery. Staff naturalists will also have a display inside Wilson Center.

Join us to celebrate the birthdays of our resident animals with games, contests, crafts and surprises. The park’s wildlife habitat staff hosts a fun-filled afternoon for guests, as well as programs to celebrate the park’s furry and feathered inhabitants. Millie the Bear, the mountain’s mascot, will make special appearances throughout the day. Events begin at 11 a.m. and continue until 3:30 p.m. Join for one activity or all. Included with admission.

On Animal Enrichment Day, guests see firsthand how Grandfather Mountain cares for its resident animals. An enrichment is a special treat, new toy or even an unfamiliar scent given to the animals to break up their routines and help keep them active and intellectually stimulated. Watch enrichment demonstrations, talk directly with keepers and participate in family-oriented games and crafts. Included with admission. Activities kick off at the Wilson Center for Nature Discovery and adjacent Wildlife Habitats.

For over fifty years, since the US Supreme Court upheld desegregation in a Charlotte-based case against the Board of Education in 1971, the issue of desegregation—and resegregation—has been important to our city.
In the 7th Annual “Talking Policy in the Queen City" a panel organized by UNC Charlotte’s Public Policy Ph.D. program will share expertise and insights gained from academia, research, and firsthand experience in the Charlotte community. Each panelist on “Generations of Change: School Desegregation and Resegregation” will bring a unique perspective, contributing to a comprehensive dialogue that aims to deepen our understanding of complex issues. The Public Policy Ph.D. Program, which has operated for over 20 years, also presents a research poster presentation session to highlight the work of its doctoral students with a light reception. Moderating this panel will be Daisy Walker, Ph.D., Educational Leadership at UNC Charlotte┃publicpolicy.charlotte.edu
