JAZZ ROOM Presents: Luther S. Allison Quartet
Classic Jazz Piano
A rising star of the jazz piano tradition and JazzArts Academy alum, Luther Allison is known for his soulful lyrical touch and dynamic modern swing. Having performed with luminaries including Samara Joy, Rodney Whitaker, and Etienne Charles, this Grammy-winning artist brings his acclaimed quartet to the JAZZ ROOM for an unforgettable “Homecoming” weekend.
Luther S. Allison is a Charlotte-born pianist, drummer, composer, and educator recognized for his blues-based, gospel-inspired approach rooted in bebop and soul. A graduate of the University of Tennessee and Michigan State University, he has toured internationally with artists including Samara Joy, Jazzmeia Horn, Rodney Whitaker, and The Baylor Project. His debut album I Owe It All To You on Posi-Tone Records earned 4.5 stars from Downbeat, which praised his artistry as “a pianist who seems to have no weak points.” Allison has performed at premier venues and festivals worldwide, composed for the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra at Wynton Marsalis’ commission, and is a proud Yamaha artist.
The JAZZ ROOM provides a casual and intimate setting with tables and a full bar, reminiscent of the classic jazz rooms of yesteryear.
Thank you to our JAZZ ROOM contributors: Bank of America, South Arts, Knight Foundation, Arts & Science Council, North Carolina Arts Council, Alice L Walton Foundation, Ford Foundation, and the Infusion Fund.

Dracula a feminist revenge fantasy, really
October 16-18 at 7:30 p.m., October 19 at 2 p.m.
Written by Kate Hamill
Based on the novel by Bram Stoker
Directed by Mark Sutch
Scenic Design by Dolph Orthwein '26
Plays in the Barber Theatre
Both terrifying and riotous, Kate Hamill’s imaginative, gender-bending “feminist revenge fantasy” is like no Dracula you’ve ever seen—exploring the nature of predators and reinventing the story as a smart, disquieting, darkly comic drama. Hamill’s signature style and postmodern wit upends this familiar tale of Victorian vampires—driving a stake through the heart of toxic masculinity.
Please be advised that this production contains simulated acts of violence onstage and considerable gore. Suitable for ages 14 and up.

Traditional Series: Windborne
The 2025–26 Traditional Series opens with Windborne, a virtuoso a cappella vocal quartet. Many of their works are original compositions, while others are highly original adaptations from over two centuries of American vocal music. The quartet’s embracing of traditional folk music and their special love of social activism for some of America’s great 20th-century songwriters highlight their repertoire. This is a cappella music at its finest.
