  • Health and Equity in the Historic West End Green District: Benefits of Community-Led Green Infrastructure
Speaker: Daisha Williams, Environmental Justice Manager, Clean AIRE NC

Like many cities in North Carolina, Charlotte harbors a deep, well-documented economic and racial divide. As a result, Historic West End (HWE) residents live in a “crescent” around the center city affected by aging housing stock, high energy burdens, proximity to major roads and industry, elevated rates of illness, and other factors leading to the community being especially vulnerable to the effects of air pollution and climate change.
To address these challenges, the HWE Green District is a partnership between Clean AIRE NC and residents with the shared goal of developing and implementing initiatives designed to reduce air pollution, improve health, and address climate-related challenges. In this session Environmental Justice Manager, Daisha Williams will discuss the challenges and benefits of building a healthy, empowered, and climate-resilient community.
This session will be presented live online. Registrants will receive the link to join on the day of the program.

  • Writer, game designer, and journalist Chesley “Chez” Oxendine (Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina) discusses the role of Indigenous developers in bringing game stories to life, as well as the slowly increasing prominence of Native characters in gaming culture. He aims to discuss successful portrayals (such as Human Head’s “Prey”) and less accurate representation (the stereotypical Native characters in fighting games.) He also hopes to demonstrate that the gaming industry, and tech in general, can be a great pathway out of the poverty that many Natives face in their formative years - and that the industry needs more Indigenous voices.

  • Movie and television (or should we say streaming) enthusiasts in 2022 are able to watch such Native-related programming such as “Rutherford Falls”, “Reservation Dogs,” or even watch the latest Predator film “Prey.” Disney is also currently working on Echo, a series starring a Native American and deaf actress. On social media, you might also be familiar with such accounts as Nathan Apodaca, Notorious Cree or be familiar with Indigenous hashtags from a wide range of Native content creators on TikTok, Twitter and Instagram.

The media world was not always this friendly to proper Indigenous representation. Vincent Schilling- an Akwesasne Mohawk journalist, public speaker and editor of Native Viewpoint- will explain the volatile road Indigenous people have had to traverse over the years in the media, film and television industry and discusses how the world still has a long way to go in pop culture in terms of Indigenous representation.
