Redistricting plans that enlarge North Carolina's congressional delegation and retool the state House seats have now each cleared one legislative chamber. The House voted along party lines Tuesday for a map that redraws the chamber's 120 districts, which are based on population changes recorded in the 2020 census.

NC DMV commissioner pushes for changes to deal with long lines

Biltmore reopens as Asheville tourism officials say the city welcomes the return of visitors
It’s been more than a month since Hurricane Helene devastated parts of the North Carolina mountains. The storm and its aftermath brought the busy fall tourism season in the region to a halt before it even started. This weekend the Biltmore Estate in Asheville is reopening to visitors for the first time since the storm. And a few days ago on social media the city’s tourism bureau, Explore Asheville, said the city is again welcoming visitors.

Justices held oral arguments Monday examining a lawsuit that alleges the legislature was barred from placing constitutional amendments on the ballot because lawmakers who agreed to do so were elected with the help of distorted district boundaries.

Asheville's Mission Health fined by the state for not reporting an employee’s COVID death
HCA/Mission Health, the primary hospital system in Asheville, has been fined almost $30,000 by the North Carolina Department of Labor for violating health and safety laws. HCA can appeal the citations or pay the proposed penalties.
