  • With the use of lines in her work, winter/spring 2021 artist-in-residence Sharon Norwood unravels relationships between postcolonial structures, systems of power, and how they implicate assumptions of “the other”. Join Norwood and Jonell Logan, Creative Director at McColl Center, in a conversation on the notions of “otherness”. In questioning those systems that shape understanding of identity, Norwood will talk about the need to express the racial, social, political, and cultural histories of Black people in her work.
  • The imagined and structural spaces winter/spring 2021 artist-in-residence Rehab El Sadek creates are based on inspiration and memory. Join the interactive conversation to understand El Sadek’s creative process in constructing place and the sources she uses, including Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino and contemporary and ancient Egyptian architecture. Then, she will lead the audience in a city map-building activity, envisioning an imaginary, fantastical city created through group visualization. Get inspired by reading Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino and, optionally, be prepared to respond to a few prompts in the comments during the talk: Who lives in this city? How is it architecturally unique? What challenges inform its design? What do the inhabitants eat?

  • JazzArts Charlotte’s virtual live music series is excited to present vocalist Dawn Anthony and saxophonist Greg Jerrell with an uplifting evening of gospel and jazz. “Greg Jarrell is a man with an enormous heart and an enormous musical gift.” Combine that with the heartfelt storytelling and incredibly compelling voice of Dawn Anthony, and you have a night of music prepared to touch your soul. Anthony and Jerrell have mastered their duo, with a livestream from Myers Park Baptist every week. In this presentation, this pair will bring us a combination of gospel and progressive jazz like Michael Porter. Dawn Anthony is a staple of the Charlotte jazz music scene, is a teaching artist, lecturer, and performer. She has headlined tributes to Nancy Wilson and to Ella Fitzgerald, among many other performances in the JAZZ ROOM, as well as serving as an educator for our online vocal classes well as the exciting Webop program. We most recently heard her talents, as the vocalist for We Insist!. Greg Jarrell is co-founder of QC Family Tree, a community of rooted discipleship in west Charlotte whose mission is to support economic opportunity within the Enderly Park neighborhood. As a jazz saxophonist, he regularly performs in concert and club venues across North and South Carolina in jazz, classical, and commercial settings. Greg combines that passion with his jazz saxophone to make an impact whenever and wherever he is.   • This guided ‘book club’ is a 10 week study of Debby Irving’s book Waking Up White and Finding Myself in the Story of Race. The book has been described as a brutally honest, unflinching exploration of race and personal identity, told with heart by a truly gifted storyteller. Learning how to interrupt racism is part of learning how to be an ally for racial equity. Participants will read the book together and reflect on its message while growing personally and in community with others. The group will be led by three members of Light of Christ United Methodist Church in Ballantyne and will meet online, via Zoom.   • For many churches, creativity has been key throughout the pandemic in 2020 and so far in 2021. Instead of doing the traditional Easter Egg Hunt we have done in past years, this year Light of Christ United Methodist Church is hosting an Easter Scavenger Hunt throughout the Ballantyne area. The Easter Scavenger Hunt will be on Saturday, March 27. Everyone can start any time between 11:00 am - 1:00 pm at Light of Christ Methodist Church (9106 Bryant Farms Road Charlotte, NC 28277). You will then be given clues involving the Easter story from a Light of Christ volunteer at each stop taking you to seven different places within a 5-mile radius. The Easter Scavenger hunt will end with a sweet treat from Crumbl in Stonecrest. This event is free for all families in the community! Following the talk, a screening of the film, Coded Bias, will take place. The film explores the fallout of MIT Media Lab researcher Joy Baolamwini’s startling discovery that facial recognition does not see dark-skinned faces accurately, and her journey to push for the first-ever legislation in the U.S. to govern against bias in the algorithms that impact us all.
