  • "For this special Black History Month Open Air, curator for the Gantt Center Dexter Wimberly speaks with an artist featured in our current exhibit, discussing their inspirations, experience, and the artistic process. ABOUT OPEN AIR Open Air is a monthly series of virtual studio visits and intimate conversations with Black contemporary artists across the United States. Join us as we get a behind the scenes look at exciting new art as it's being created, while connecting particular works to some of the most pressing issues of our times. Historically, African-American artists have been compelled to make their own way within the art world, challenging traditional ideas of cultural representation and creating their own systems of merit, criticality and reward outside of the mainstream. ABOUT THE CURATOR Dexter Wimberly is an independent curator and entrepreneur who has organized exhibitions and developed programs with galleries and institutions throughout the world, including The Third Line in Dubai, Koki Arts in Tokyo and the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City. His exhibitions have been reviewed and featured in publications including the New York Times, Artforum and Hyperallergic. Wimberly has also served as Director of Strategic Planning at Independent Curators International in New York City. Prior to his curatorial career, Wimberly was the managing partner and CEO of August Bishop advertising agency, representing a diverse array of clients including Adidas, The Coca-Cola Company and HBO. In 2018, Wimberly founded ART WORLD CONFERENCE, a professional development company for visual artists and arts professionals, and serves as its CEO. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/bhmwtg-open-air-tickets-140444235489?aff=ebdsoporgprofile"

To create a point of reflection, this Unmasked conversation welcomes the voices of thought leaders in the Black community to compare and contrast our cultural journey. Scholars, artists, and activists alike address questions that acknowledge our history in efforts to welcome a desired future. How has our perception and position in society shaped our culture? How have the disparities influenced our expression of and identification with being Black? What are some notable patterns in our history? • This month, we sit down with NEA Jazz Master, drummer, vibraphonist, composer, and educator Jason Marsalis, the youngest of America's "First Family of Jazz". It’s been a tumultuous year for music, and for the Marsalis family with the loss of Marsalis patriarch, the great Ellis Marsalis. We’ll talk about the state of jazz and carrying the torch forward. Combining talent with a maverick spirit, Jason Marsalis grew in popularity as a founding member of the multi-award-winning Latin-jazz group Los Hombres Calientes in 1998, shifted to a more classic jazz sound with the Marcus Roberts Trio in early 2000s, and then began leading as a vibraphonist in his jazz compositions and performances. In 2012, he recorded with the Native Jazz Quartet, arranging folk songs into jazz tunes. He continues to explore and receive accolades for his sticks, mallets, and pen. Tune in every 2nd Tuesday of the month to discover outstanding musicians, past and present, regional and international. Our interactive events are a chance for you to engage with the artists who are usually up on the stage.
