  • Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra bass virtuoso, Carlos Henriquez makes his JAZZ ROOM Charlotte debut with his all-star ensemble, Latin Algorithm, performing high-energy rhythm-filled fusion of Latin and Modern Jazz with new compositions and selections from Henriquez’s most recent acclaimed albums. This is a special JAZZ ROOM in partnership with the Charlotte International Arts Festival and Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration.
    A Bronx, New York native, Carlos Henriquez studied music at an early age, beginning with guitar, and later bass at a Juilliard School’s Music Advancement Program. Shortly following high school, Henriquez joined the Wynton Marsalis Septet and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, touring the world and featured on more than 25 albums. Henriquez has performed and recorded with artist including Chucho Valdes, Tito Puente, Danilo Perez, Eddie Palmieri, the Marsalis Family, Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, Lenny Kravitz, Marc Anthony and many others. He continues to flourish as a bassist with 3 great projects as a leader including The Bronx Pyramid, Dizzy Con Clave, and The South Bronx Story.

    The JAZZ ROOM provides a casual and intimate setting with tables and a full bar, reminiscent of the classic jazz rooms of yesteryear.

  • Black people don't swim, right? It's not true, according to the producers of a new show that will explore, celebrate and reclaim the history and renaissance of Black swimming in Charlotte.

    Mixed Metaphors Productions will present SwimCap, which combines traditional theatre, visual art, and aerial performances to trace the ways that Black swimming has shaped Charlotte.

    SwimCap runs from August 18th-August 20th, with shows on Friday at 7:30 pm, Saturday at 2 pm and 7:30 pm, and Sunday at 2 pm and 7:30 pm. It will take place at Brooklyn Grace in uptown Charlotte. Tickets are $20 at Eventbrite.

    In this beginner pastels class, students will learn how to create a nude figure. The class will focus on the introduction to pastels and figure drawing, including learning the difference between the types of pastels, and how to choose the pastels that are right for you and your project. Students will work together to complete a large-scale figure drawing in pastel, focusing on drawing basic shapes and forms, light and shadow, and color theory.

    Advanced students are welcome to join this class. Those who come to the class with a larger skillset will be challenged with new techniques, will learn to use pastels to create abstract and impressionistic paintings, and will learn to create more complex and detailed pastel paintings.

  • This presentation explores how a history of racism and white supremacy inspired law and policy that has fostered a legacy of inequality in the United States. It will examine how racial disparities impact every facet of Criminal Justice, from police encounters, arrest, and sentencing; while also encouraging the participants to recognize their own racial biases and how these biases influence their relationships with clients and other stakeholders in the Criminal Justice system
  • Join us Saturday, November 4th for this year's Drop Dead 5K presented by Avidxchange!
    This unique race will take place entirely within the 70+ acres of Charlotte’s Historic Elmwood/Pinewood Cemetery. Runners, joggers, and walkers of all levels are welcome! The course winds through the roadways of the cemeteries allowing participants to run by the likes of Belk, Ivey, Morrison, Tate, and Blake, just to name a few of the resident luminaries.
    Join HEPI for the 5K race which will include a fun run/walk, awards presentation, DJ, food trucks, a guided tour and beer! NEW THIS YEAR! At 10 a.m., join us for our first 1 Mile Kids Fun Run presented by Brewer Global! This is FREE for kids (registration is required) and includes a fun run finisher medal.

    Before there was a Department of Parks and Recreation, cemeteries were purposely designed for dual-use. Easter and Halloween parades were conducted in Elmwood. Families had picnics and children played in the green space. We at HEPI believe that we, in concert with the City, can provide both a safe, friendly, and serene environment for those interred, those visiting loved ones, and those wanting to learn about our past or just take a break from the hubbub.historicelmwoodpinewood.org.
