  • Join the Rowan Big Band All-Stars, an 18-piece community big band, for Instruments of Love, a free concert and dance on Sunday, August 6, 2023, from 4 to 6 p.m. It takes place at Southpark Church, 3151 Apex Drive, Charlotte, NC.

    Food will be available for purchase and any love offering collected will benefit Dahlia Grove, a nonprofit that empowers and employs women survivors of human trafficking and domestic violence.

    The band performs swing and jazz music in the tradition of Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Duke Ellington and other great early twentieth-century bandleaders.
  • Author La Shonda Mims will discuss her book, "Drastic Dykes and Accidental Activists: Queer Women in the Urban South," on August 18 at the Dubois Center at UNC Charlotte Center City. The event is co-sponsored by J. Murrey Atkins Library, the UNC Charlotte Department of History and Graduate History Association, and Charlotte Pride.

    La Shonda Mims is an Associate Professor of History at Middle Tennessee State University. Concerned with the intersections of gender, race, region, and queer identity, her book, Drastic Dykes and Accidental Activists, published by the University of North Carolina Press, examines lesbian life in Atlanta, Georgia, and Charlotte, North Carolina. Her 2019 article published in the Journal of Women’s History, "Drastic Dykes: The New South and Lesbian Life," explored lesbian-feminist action in the urban New South.

The conversation with Eig, moderated by Mary C. Curtis, will center on the relevancy of Dr. King’s life and work today, surprising discoveries he unveiled during his research, and more.

    The program is simple – if you have been drinking – take an Uber, Lyft, or cab ride home, and we will reimburse you for it!

    Making the responsible decision to catch a ride home can save lives.

    DETAILS TO THE PROGRAM:

    Rides must be in the Charlotte, NC area.

    Rides must be taken between 5 PM on the day of the holiday and 10 AM the next morning.

    You must be of legal drinking age to qualify (21 and over).

    Valid for one, one-way ride to a safe destination.

    Limit of one reimbursement per person.

    A maximum value of $25.00 anywhere in the greater Charlotte, NC area.

    The maximum value includes a tip of up to 10%. Anything above a 10% tip on the base fare will not be reimbursed.

    Participation in this promotion is limited to the first 25 submissions per qualifying holiday.
