Elder Abuse Awareness

In North Carolina in 2012 there were more than 21,000 reports of abuse, neglect or exploitation of vulnerable and older adults. This is an issue that affects 2.1 million older Americans nationwide each year. Abuse of older citizens can be physical, emotional or financial; and it has continued to be a persistent problem so much so that Governor McCrory responded to the epidemic by making this month Vulnerable and Elder Abuse Awareness Month. And community organizations are responding by raising awareness and educating the public. On Wednesday The Cabarrus County Task Force for Prevention of Abuse of Elderly and Disabled Adults is holding an all-day event to provide the public with information and resources to get help. A conversation about how to identify and help stop elder abuse, when Charlotte Talks.

Guests

Kathy Mowrer - Adult and Aging Services Program Administrator at the Cabarrus County Department of Human Services
Laurie Abounader - Regional Ombudsman with Centralina Area Agency on Aging
Shazia Keller - Staff attorney at Legal Aid of North Carolina, Inc.
