For years, the United States Department of Agriculture helped landowners drain wetlands for agricultural use. But by the 1980s they had changed their focus, recognizing the key role that wetlands play in our ecosystem and our economy. In North Carolina, the Worldwide Fund for Nature pegged it at $5,500 an acre. We learn about wetland restoration here and around the country from the USDA.
