Recapping the results of Tuesday's mayoral primary, then a closer look at what Southern food says about the South and food's role in defining this region. Food writers pull up to the table with Mike Collins.


For the sixth time since 2013, Charlotte is getting a new mayor.

First-term incumbent Jennifer Roberts lost to Mayor Pro-Tem Vi Lyles in Tuesday's Democratic primary, 46-36 percent. State Sen. Joel Ford placed a distant third.

The fallout from the HB2 battle and the Keith Scott shooting took a political toll on Roberts.

Republican City Councilman Kenny Smith easily secured the GOP nomination, and has amassed a large war chest for the November election.

In her book Consuming Identity: The Role of Food in Redefining the South, UNC Charlotte communications professor Ashli Stokes analyzes the role food plays in allegiances, bonds, cultural exchanges and building identity.

The South is one of the few regions of the country that has a specific cuisine.  Rich with history and traditions, what we choose to eat and how we prepare it says a lot about who we are.

Since food crosses lines of race, class and gender, it can also open dialogue for people to find a common language.

Host Mike Collins is joined by food writers Andrea King Collier and Ashli Stokes to explore the rhetorical powers of food.
