Charlotte Talks: Jon Meacham and The Soul of America

Thursday, June 14, 2018

Jon Meacham’s latest book, The Soul of America, reminds us that the political divisiveness and turmoil Americans are experiencing today are common throughout American history. The former editor of Newsweek is now a Pulitzer-Prize winning author and presidential historian. He joins guest host Erik Spanberg to discuss some of our most tumultuous moments in U.S. History.

On this edition of Charlotte Talks....

Pulitzer Prize-winning Presidential historian Jon Meacham has witten biographies for Andrew Jackson, George H. W. Bush and Thomas Jefferson, as well as other books about our founding fathers and important leaders in American history.

His latest work, The Soul of America, looks at moments in our history where division and fear were heightened and when the "better angels of our nature" (in the words of Abraham Lincoln) overcame those divisions.

Meacham's aim with the book was to help readers understand the current American political climate by looking at the past and demonstrating that times of divisiveness are not unprecedented.

Guest host Erik Spanberg from The Charlotte Business Journal welcomes Jon Meacham back to Charlotte Talks for his take on The Soul of America.
