Charlotte Talks: Why Old Places Matter

Thursday, August 22nd, 2019

Newcomers often ask, “Where is old Charlotte?”  That’s because almost everything is sparklingly new.  Historic buildings give a place character and are a testimony to its soul.  Furthermore, a blend of the old and new can affect our identity and our well-being.  That’s what Tom Mayes says.  He’s from the National Trust for Historic Preservation and he will join us with a Charlotte preservationist.

Charlotte is a city that does not always value its old buildings and homes. We’ve talked many times on Charlotte Talks about the lack of history on Charlotte’s streets, and the need for more attention to historic preservation in our region.

Adria Focht, President of the Charlotte Museum of Hiistory says that historic buildings “can represent our collective history and give our city soul.”

Tom Mayes from the National Trust for Historic Preservation is the author of Why Old Places Matter: How Historical Places Affect Our Identity and Well-Being. He’ll join us to talk about the importance of preservation. Along with Adria Focht, the youngest person ever at the helm of the Museum of History.

EVENT:

Tom Mayes will speak Thursday night, August 22nd at the Charlotte Historic Preservation Awards Ceremony. The event is from 6-8pm at the Museum, 3500 Shamrock Drive. More info at www.charlottemuseum.org/preservation.
