Former South Carolina governor and congressman Mark Sanford, who launched a Republican primary challenge to President Trump this week, says the country needs to have a hard talk about its finances, and the Republican Party needs to talk about its identity in the Trump era.

The track record for candidates who've challenged their party's incumbent president for renomination isn't good. Nevertheless, Sanford on Sunday became the third Republican to enter the 2020 race.

Running on a platform of fiscal conservatism, Sanford entered the 2020 race on Sunday, just as state Republican organizations, including his own in South Carolina, are canceling their primaries to blunt the challengers' from any momentum.

"We're headed down the wrong road," Sanford told Charlotte Talks. "And I think we need to change course."
