The Western District of North Carolina, which includes Charlotte, has a new U.S. attorney.
Russ Ferguson took the oath of office on March 11.

Ferguson brings 16 years of legal experience to the role, according to a press release. He leads an office of nearly 100 federal prosecutors and support personnel, serving 32 counties across western North Carolina, including the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, the largest Native American community in the eastern United States.
At the start of his legal career, he was a federal prosecutor in Washington, D.C., trying 28 cases to verdict. He was most recently a partner at Womble Bond Dickinson, leading its complex litigation group. He has also held leadership roles with the Mecklenburg County Bar.
Ferguson replaces U.S. Attorney Dena J. King, who stepped down in February. King was nominated to the position by then-President Joe Biden in September 2021.
We sit down with Ferguson to talk about his priorities, what his office has been doing so far, and we get his perspective on our justice system.
