The Charlotte Hornets announced Thursday evening that the team has hired a new head coach.

James Borrego, 40, joins the Hornets from the San Antonio Spurs, where he spent the last three seasons as an assistant coach. He will be the 11th head coach in the Hornets franchise history.

Borrego has worked with the Spurs, the New Orleans Pelicans and the Orlando Magic in his 15 seasons with the NBA. He has been on staff with teams that have gone to 11 playoffs and two NBA Championships.

Hornets General Manager Mitch Kupchack pointed to Borrego’s experience with those teams in the decision to hire him.

“He has been a part of teams that have ascended to the highest levels of success in our league and understands what it takes to win in the NBA,” Kupchack said. “James is considered one of the NBA’s most well-regarded assistant coaches and it’s great to have him as part of our team.”

Borrego said he’s excited to coach Charlotte’s NBA team.

“I’m confident in the coaching foundation I’ve had the opportunity to develop during my time in San Antonio, Orlando and New Orleans, and I cannot wait to get to work in Charlotte,” Borrego said.

The Hornets will introduce Borrego in a press conference Friday.
