A North Carolina lawmaker has been charged in an accident he was involved in last December in which a Winston-Salem drunk driver was killed. State Rep. Larry Womble has been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle. The 70-year-old Democrat turned himself in yesterday. Womble arrived in a wheelchair and was advised of the charges and was then released on a promise to appear in court in July. Winston-Salem police said the car Womble was driving on in December crossed the center line of a street and collided head-on with a car driven by 54-year-old David Carmichael, who was killed. Police said Carmichael had a blood-alcohol content of 0.29. Womble is in his ninth term in the General Assembly representing Forsyth County , and has already announced he will not seek re-election. As WFAE's Julie Rose reports here, Womble has been instrumental in legislation to compensation victims of North Carolina 's eugenics program.
