Man threatened to kill ICE agents for recent immigration enforcement in Charlotte

A Linwood man has been arrested and charged with threatening to kill U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers in Charlotte.

Prosecutors say 27-year-old Johnathan Trent Thomas called Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police last week and said he would go to Charlotte with armor-piercing ammunition and body armor to shoot and kill ICE agents if recent immigration detentions did not stop. Prosecutors said he was referencing reported ICE activity around Albemarle Road.

Thomas mentioned the April 2024 shooting that left four officers dead in Charlotte and said he could “do a whole lot better.”

Homeland Security Investigations agents found three rifles and a handgun at Thomas’ home on Friday.

Thomas is charged with threatening to assault or murder law enforcement officers. He remains in custody and is awaiting a detention hearing.

A fluent Spanish speaker, Julian Berger will focus on Latino communities in and around Charlotte, which make up the largest group of immigrants. He will also report on the thriving immigrant communities from other parts of the world — Indian Americans are the second-largest group of foreign-born Charlotteans, for example — that continue to grow in our region.
