The Mount Holly police officer who was killed in the line of duty has been identified as 25-year-old Tyler Avery Herndon. Herndon had been an officer with the Mount Holly Police Department for less than two years. There were no additional officers that were injured during the incident.

The State Bureau of Investigation is conducting an investigation after a police officer was killed and at least one other person was injured this morning in a shooting at Mount Holly Car Wash, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.

The shooting occurred on Beatty Drive, just north of Interstate 85, when officers engaged with a breaking and entering suspect, police said.

When the officers arrived on the scene, they encountered a person with a gun. Several shots were fired between the suspect and several Mount Holly police officers. Shots were also fired at a Gaston County police officer who responded to the incident, according to CMPD.
A Mount Holly officer and the suspect were two of the people injured in the shooting. The police officer received serious injuries; the suspect only suffered a minor injury from a gunshot wound, police said.
It was unclear who the third person was or how they were injured.
All three people were rushed to Caromont Medical Center, GEMS officials said.
Police said the suspect has since been transported to Gaston County Jail, where he remains.
