CMPD arrests man accused of setting opossum on fire

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police have arrested a man they believe is responsible for a viral video showing someone setting an opossum on fire.

CMPD arrested 30-year-old Cameron Torrence in connection with a social media video showing an opossum being doused with an accelerant and burned alive. Torrence was taken into custody at the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office and has been charged with instigating cruelty to animals, probation violation, and fleeing arrest.

Last week, the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission was alerted to the video, posted on Facebook, after people contacted them. Investigators say they linked the account which posted the video to Torrence . While multiple people are heard in the video, the commission said it is still investigating to determine if others were involved, including in an additional video that was posted.

Authorities have not named any other suspects.
