Charlotte Fire assisted Matthews Fire this afternoon at the 5100 block of Morningwood Dr. after an outside gas line leak caught fire.

The Matthews Fire Department, along with other departments, including Charlotte Fire, responded this afternoon to a gas leak at the intersection of Pleasant Plains Road and Morningwood Drive in Matthews.

No injuries have been reported, but two homes were damaged. During a press conference this afternoon, Matthews Fire Chief Rob Kinniburgh described what caused the gas leak.

"Crews from Pike Electric were on scene setting poles," Kinniburgh said. "They were drilling to set the pole. We can only assume that the auger hit the natural gas line."

According to Duke Energy’s outage map, 49 customers in the area are without power.
