No injuries have been reported, but two homes were damaged. During a press conference this afternoon, Matthews Fire Chief Rob Kinniburgh described what caused the gas leak.
"Crews from Pike Electric were on scene setting poles," Kinniburgh said. "They were drilling to set the pole. We can only assume that the auger hit the natural gas line."
Charlotte Fire assisted Matthews Fire this afternoon at the 5100 block of Morningwood Dr. after an outside gas line leak caught fire. Multiple Charlotte Fire apparatus responded to support operations and help secure the scene.
