A Greensboro police officer was fatally shot inside a Food Lion grocery store Monday morning.
Officer Michael Horan was killed at the Food Lion on Lawndale Drive around 11 a.m., according to the Greensboro Police Department. Horan was responding to a call about a man with a firearm inside the grocery store.
At a news conference, officers said Horan was the first arrive on the scene and made contact with a suspect inside the store.
After a brief struggle, the suspect pulled out a gun and shot Horan before fleeing. Officials say Horan did not draw or fire his weapon.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation will be the lead agency at the request of the Greensboro Police Department.
On Tuesday, police arrested Tarell Isaac McMillian, 34, of Greensboro, and charged him with Horan's murder.
McMillion was arrested following a high speed chase with officers on Interstate 40 near Duplin County. He is being held in Guilford County Jail without bond.
