Few details known in officer-involved shooting outside Coyote Joe's

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is reviewing an officer-involved shooting that took place Saturday night outside a country music venue in west Charlotte.

The shooting took place outside of Coyote Joe’s on Wilkinson Boulevard shortly after 11 p.m., according to a city statement.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have not identified the officer or the victim, and have said only that the man killed had a firearm. Police have released no other details about the events leading up to the shooting.

In a message on its website, Coyote Joe’s identified the victim as Lucas Armstrong.

"Our heart goes out to the family of Lucas Armstrong and to the police officer involved in the tragic incident that occurred Saturday night. Our thoughts and prayers are with all that were involved," the message said.

In an interview with The Charlotte Observer, Armstrong's father, Scott Armstrong, said his son had been working at the venue as a security guard. He said he did not know why an officer shot his son.

The Observer obtained police radio traffic in which officers were reportedly heard saying a man outside the club had a gun to his head.

The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave, per standard procedure, pending further investigation.
