Atrium Health released more details about its $1 billion expansion plans announced over the summer to build new facilities at its quarterly board meeting Tuesday morning.

The plan includes adding a new 12-floor tower to Carolinas Medical Center’s main campus and expanding the pediatric and adult emergency departments.

The health system plans to lease two buildings for medical practices to move closer to the main hospital. One of those buildings will be for the Sanger Heart and Vascular Institute.

Atrium is also planning to expand its Pineville hospital by adding a seven-story building with patient rooms, a new parking garage and expanding the surgery department. Details of how much it will spend on each project haven’t been released.

In addition, the Georgia Attorney General also approved the acquisition of Macon-based Navicent Health. The health system has seven hospitals, multiple urgent care locations and medical practices. This expansion, which is expected to be finalized later this month, is just the start of Atrium’s move into Georgia. It intends to use Navicent as a regional hub as it continues to grow in central and southern Georgia. As part of the deal, Atrium will invest $425 million over the next ten years.
