The Radio Television Digital News Association recognized WFAE with two regional Edward R. Murrow Awards for breaking news coverage and continuing coverage.
The Murrow Awards honor local and national news stories that demonstrate principles and standards of excellence set forth by Edward R. Murrow, a journalism pioneer.
WFAE’s awards include:
· Breaking News Coverage – Four officers killed in Charlotte.
· Continuing Coverage – Charlotte’s housing affordability crisis.
These awards reflect WFAE’s commitment to covering our community and the news that matters, both when the unexpected happens, with up-to-the minute coverage of breaking news events, to ongoing coverage of the longer, more nuanced stories that emerge from closely following a single issue over time.
“I think these awards really reflect how well WFAE plays on both ends of the news spectrum, the breaking and the long-term,” said Executive Editor Ely Portillo. “On the tragic day of April 29, 2024, we were there on-scene, with multiple reporters, newscasters, radio hosts and editors updating the website and our on-air newscasts for hours and hours, without a break. And on the other side of things, the longer-term side, our award for continuing coverage is a real testimony to how much expertise WFAE reporters have built up and how doggedly, for years, we’ve covered the housing crisis in Charlotte.”
WFAE competes in a region that’s comprised of stations in North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee and West Virginia.
As regional winners, these entries will advance to the National Murrow Award competition.
