Mecklenburg County Manager Harry Jones will take a $20,000 pay cut next year, while salaries for other county employees will remain flat. "I just felt that in this economy, as a leader of the organization, I'm alright with taking home less," said Jones. Jones says he asked county commissioners to cut his total compensation in 2011 to $283,000 - that's 6.6 percent less than he earned for the fiscal year ending June 30. The county commission also voted last night to renegotiate the county manager's contract so he will no longer be eligible for a bonus. Instead, Jones' base salary will be adjusted each year based on his job performance and the market rate for county managers. County commissioners were strongly criticized last year for granting the manager a $38,000 bonus while county employees received no pay raises.
