Knights Clear First Funding Hurdle For Uptown Stadium
Editor's note: This story includes a correction. The Mecklenburg County spokesman made a mistake in saying that naming rights were included in the sponsorship deal. The Charlotte Knights have not confirmed that publicly, which the following story now reflects. The Charlotte Knights have secured two major sponsors for their proposed uptown stadium, including one for naming rights of the facility. That's according to a spokesman for Mecklenburg County, which set a March 31 deadline for the baseball team to demonstrate strong sponsor support. The county has pledged to provide free land and $8 million toward construction of the stadium if the Knights meet a series of deadlines. By June 30, the team must have full financing plans in place for the $54 million stadium. The Charlotte City Council has been asked to contribute $11 million toward that total. The council's economic development committee meets at noon Wednesday to debate the proposal.
