North Carolina’s unemployment rate fell a tenth of a point in September to 6.7 percent. That’s according to the state Division of Employment Security. The dip follows two months of slight increases in the state’s jobless rate.
In South Carolina, the unemployment rate rose three tenths of a percent to 6.6 percent. The national average jobless rate for September was 5.9 percent.
Group Now Advises Merger Of Chiquita And Fyffes
An advisory group has changed course and now recommends Chiquita shareholders vote in favor of a merger deal with the Irish produce company Fyffes. Institutional Shareholders Services previously endorsed a buyout bid from two Brazilian companies, Cutrale and the Safra Group. The advisory group says it now believes the Fyffes deal would give Chiquita shareholders more long-term value.
Cutrale and The Safra Group upped their offer for Chiquita last week to $14 a share. Shareholders vote Friday on the Fyffes deal. If it’s approved, the merger would create the world’s largest banana company.
