Police arrested a 19 year-old man they say robbed and sexually assaulted a couple in uptown Charlotte early Thursday morning. The couple was walking back to their hotel around 2 a.m. when police say Tevin Williams approached them by the convention center holding a gun.

He forced them into an alleyway where police say he assaulted them and took a wallet and cell phone.

CMPD Captain Dave Johnson credited the victims for reporting the crime quickly. Officers located Williams about two hours later.

“I give just as much credit to the victims for being alert enough and paying attention enough in a highly stressful and dynamic situation, that they were able to give us a description that led to the arrest," said Johnson.

Williams is charged with armed robbery, kidnapping, and rape. He’s been arrested several times. He was released last month from prison for serving a sentence for armed robbery.
