Woman Charged With Running Unlicensed Day Care

The owner of a day care where a baby died is charged with running an unlicensed day care out of a home in northwest Charlotte.

The state Department of Child Development and early education launched an investigation last October after police responded to a call about an unresponsive infant in the home. The medical examiner said the two-month-old boy died of suffocation as a result of “an unsafe sleeping environment.”

The owner of the daycare, Aquinetta White, is charged with a felony. Police say 16 children were in the care of White the day after the boy died. This is the second time White was found to be operating an unlicensed day care. The first time was 2013. CMPD Captain Roslyn Maglione says unlicensed day cares are a problem.

“It seems like maybe about once a month we find one and that they’re usually in home day cares. And we feel like a lot of that is because of the cost of daycare,” said Captain Maglione.

She urges parents to check the Department of Health and Human Services' website to make sure their daycare is licensed by the state.
